Boarding My Pointer

Whether you're heading out of town or just need a structured, professional place for your pointer to stay, finding the right dog boarding solution matters. Pointers aren’t like other gundogs — they’re athletes, bred to run hard and think fast. At The Gundog Club, we know exactly what they need, and we’ve built our dog boarding program around them.

Are pointing breeds a good fit for boarding?

Not just anywhere. Gundogs like German Shorthaired Pointers, Vizslas, and Brittanys can struggle in generic boarding environments where their drive and intelligence are overlooked. Pointers thrive with daily structure, movement, and purpose. When those needs aren’t met, you’ll see frustration build: pacing, barking, stress. At The Gundog Club, we specialize in high-drive gundogs — giving them the stimulation and clarity they need to stay balanced, sharp, and content.

What should I look for in a boarding facility for my pointer?

A good dog boarding program should do more than just house your pup. You want a place where your athlete is managed with intention — given space to move, work, and rest. Look for:

  • Experience handling field-bred sporting dogs like German Shorthaired Pointers, Gordon Setters, or Brittanys
  • Ample time outdoors before returning to clean runs
  • Staff trained to read and manage working-breed energy
  • A clear daily routine that includes physical and mental engagement

Will my dog be worked while boarded?

Absolutely. Our members use boarding as a time for continued progress, not pause. Every dog here for boarding receives engagement and structure. A Vizsla staying here for a long weekend, for example, will still have a better-managed experience than they'd get almost anywhere else. From "roading" (a controlled run next to a UTV) to heel work with the trainer, they will always go to bed tired and properly stimulated.

Do pointing breeds get along with other dogs?

In general, yes — but temperament and environment both matter. Many are naturally social, but others can be more intense and territorial. It all just depends. Our staff evaluates every dog and manages interactions accordingly, we certainly don't just lump 'em all in together! We don’t do chaotic group play, and safety and soundness always come first.

What do I need to provide when boarding my pointer?

Food is provided by the club, but you’re welcome to bring own if you'd prefer not to switch. Any supplements and/or medication you regularly feed can be sent along, and we’ll follow your instructions exactly. Please do not send crates, bedding, or toys — we provide everything needed there!

What’s different about boarding at The Gundog Club?

Everything we do is designed around one kind of dog: the athlete. That means your Brittany, Vizsla, or GSP isn’t surrounded by bored doodles or left in an overstimulating group-play free-for-all. Here, dogs are managed like professionals — with clear boundaries, consistent routines, and daily structure. Whether they’re here for a quick stay or a long-term dog boarding, they stay sharp, settled, and well cared for.
